Fiordland is New Zealand at its most primeval: glacier-carved sounds where sheer rainforest walls plunge into black water, waterfalls drop hundreds of metres, and the only sounds are birdsong and the sea. It rains often here — and that is the secret, for rain sets a thousand temporary falls running down the cliffs.
We base you for the great walks and the cruises, and weave in the wider South Island — Queenstown, the lakes, and the Southern Alps — for a journey of constant, jaw-dropping scenery.
Trip highlights
Milford Sound
Cruise beneath Mitre Peak past thundering waterfalls and basking seals — even more magical on an overnight boat.
Doubtful Sound
Wilder and quieter than Milford, reached across a lake and over a pass; a true wilderness on the water.
Great walks
Sections of the Milford and Routeburn tracks bring you into the rainforest and alpine country on foot.
